Our Mission
The Sovereign Routes Foundation is a national advocacy and educational non-profit dedicated to deconstructing the intellectual architecture of Native American dispossession. Our work exposes the legal, theological, and ideological systems that enabled the systematic removal of Indigenous peoples from their ancestral homelands.
Illuminating the Frameworks of Dispossession
For centuries, doctrines such as the Doctrine of Discovery, Vacuum Domicilium, and the Marshall Trilogy provided the legal and moral justification for the seizure of Native lands. These frameworks transformed sophisticated Indigenous land management systems into targets of removal, erasure, and forced assimilation.
We examine how these ideas evolved into tools of:
- Legal suppression
- Semantic entrapment
- Judicial manipulation
- Cultural genocide
Restoring the Missing History
Through direct engagement with:
- Museums
- Educational institutions
- Libraries
- Historical societies
we work to restore this vital, often-erased history to the public square. Our mission challenges the enduring “pioneer myths” that sanitize or distort the reality of Native American removal.
By grounding our work in documented evidence, legal history, and Indigenous perspectives, we aim to reshape national understanding of how this land was taken—and why that truth matters today.
